A Foliware carton is a sealed master carton holding shrink-sealed
inner packs. Square plates ship 25 units to an inner pack and 12 packs
to a carton, giving 300 plates. The 12 inch reinforced round plate ships
20 to a pack and 12 packs to a carton, giving 240. Bowls ship 25 to a
pack and 24 packs to a carton, giving 600. Minimum order is one
carton.
Most quotes in this category are given in pieces. Almost no buyer
receives goods in pieces. You receive master cartons, and inside them,
inner packs. Getting the arithmetic right before you enquire saves a
round of emails and, more importantly, stops you ordering a quantity
that does not divide cleanly into what actually ships.
The inner pack is the shrink-sealed bundle a service line opens. The
master carton is the sealed shipping unit that leaves the factory and
arrives at your door. Every commercial decision, price, freight,
storage, stock rotation, sits on the carton. Every operational decision,
station stocking, wastage, hygiene, sits on the inner pack.
| Product line | Units per inner pack | Inner packs per carton | Units per carton |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square plates, 5 inch to 9 inch | 25 | 12 | 300 |
| 12 inch reinforced round traditional meal plate | 20 | 12 | 240 |
| Bowls | 25 | 24 | 600 |
| 6 x 4.5 inch snack tray | 25 | 12 | 300 |

Two things follow from this table that buyers regularly get
wrong.
The first is that the bowl carton holds twice as many units as a
plate carton. A buyer who orders “ten cartons” expecting a balanced
service set ends up with 3,000 plates and 6,000 bowls. Bowls are smaller
and nest more densely, so more of them fit the same shipping unit. Plan
bowls in cartons, not in matched pairs with plates.
The second is that the 12 inch reinforced round plate breaks the
25-unit pattern. It packs 20 to a bundle because of its diameter and rim
depth. If you are running a traditional service alongside a square
service, your pack maths changes between the two lines, and a stock
sheet that assumes 25 everywhere will drift within a month.
The inner pack is not packaging convenience. It is the hygiene and
count boundary.
A sealed 25-unit bundle can be carried to a station, opened, used and
finished within a service without the rest of the carton being exposed.
In a banqueting kitchen or a live catering setup, that is the difference
between a carton that stays clean through a four-hour service and one
that has been open, handled and partly contaminated by hour two. It is
also how you count. A part-used carton is countable in bundles rather
than by recounting loose pieces, which is what makes a stock check take
two minutes instead of twenty.
For anyone running a documented food safety system, this matters
beyond convenience. ISO 22000:2018 is built on hazard analysis and
control at defined points in the chain, and an intact sealed pack is the
simplest control point you have between dispatch and service.
Work backwards from covers, not from a budget. The method:
Worked example. A caterer running 400 covers, plated main plus a
starter and a dessert on smaller formats:
| Format | Draw per cover | Units needed | Units per carton | Cartons to order |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 inch square, main | 1 | 400 | 300 | 2 |
| 6 inch square, starter | 1 | 400 | 300 | 2 |
| 5 inch square, dessert | 1 | 400 | 300 | 2 |
| Bowl, side or dip | 1 | 400 | 600 | 1 |
Seven cartons covers the service with genuine headroom on every
format, because rounding up has already built in the buffer. The bowl
line is the one to watch: one carton gives you 600 against a 400
requirement, so you carry 200 forward rather than ordering a second
carton you do not need.
The minimum order is one carton, and it is one carton per format
rather than one carton in total. That distinction matters when you are
trialling. A buyer who wants to evaluate three formats is placing a
three carton order, not a one carton order.
This is usually the right way to trial anyway. A single format tells
you about that format. Three formats tell you whether the range works as
a service system, which is the actual question when you are replacing an
incumbent supplier.
Two checks, both fast, both worth doing on the first delivery from
any supplier.
Count the inner packs, not the pieces. A plate carton should yield 12
sealed bundles. If it yields 11, you have a short carton and you have
found it in fifteen seconds rather than three weeks later when your
stock sheet stops reconciling.
Check one bundle for count and condition. Open a single pack, count
it, and look at edge condition and colour consistency across the pieces.
You are not auditing the batch. You are confirming that what was sealed
matches what was declared.
Short counts are the most common commercial complaint in this
category, and they are also the easiest to catch. A supplier who
guarantees counts should have no problem with you verifying them.
Send three things and a quotation can be built immediately: the
formats you need, the carton count per format, and the destination.
Pricing in this category moves with volume and destination, so a request
that carries those three is answerable without a follow-up.
How many areca leaf plates are in one carton? Square
plates in the 5 inch to 9 inch range ship 300 units per master carton,
made up of 12 shrink-sealed inner packs of 25. The 12 inch reinforced
round traditional plate ships 240 units, made up of 12 packs of 20.
How many bowls are in a carton? 600 units, made up
of 24 inner packs of 25. Bowls nest more densely than plates, which is
why the carton holds twice the unit count of a plate carton of
comparable size.
What is the minimum order quantity? One carton, and
the minimum applies per format. If you need three formats, the minimum
order is three cartons.
Can I order part of a carton? No. The master carton
is the shipping unit and it leaves the factory sealed. Splitting it
would break both the count guarantee and the hygiene seal on the inner
packs.
What is an inner pack for? It is the hygiene and
count boundary. A sealed 25-unit bundle can be taken to a service
station and used without exposing the rest of the carton, and it lets
you count stock in bundles rather than loose pieces.
How long does a carton order take to dispatch?
Standard lead time is 14 to 21 business days from order confirmation.
Dispatch scheduling is confirmed at the point of quotation, and it moves
with production loading rather than with order size alone.
